September Minimalist Challenge
Things in our life have gotten even more challenging—who knew that was possible? We bought our full-time RV, The Beaver™. (Check out our reel introducing it and the full tour on our YouTube channel!) There will definitely be more posts about The Beaver™ later, but I’m still processing it all. We weren’t planning to buy for another year or so, and now I find myself looking at everything differently. Every single thing I buy or own, I ask: Is this coming on the road with us?
Obviously, we have too much stuff. As we’ve shared before, we’ve been doing a yearly garage sale to let things go. But to speed things along, we’ve decided to take on the Minimalist Challenge this September.
The challenge is simple: you get rid of the number of items that matches the day of the month. On September 1st, we each let go of one thing. On September 5th, we each let go of five things. By the end of the month, that adds up to 465 items per person—or 930 things together! It’s amazing how much we’ve accumulated over the years without realizing it.
Everything we collect goes out to the shop to prep for the next garage sale. Whatever doesn’t sell will go directly to the thrift store. The key rule: nothing comes back into the house or RV. Letting go is freeing—but it’s also tough, because so many things carry memories.
The hardest thing to let go of, though, has been our old RV. It’s been wonderful, full of memories, and it honestly still feels “perfect” in so many ways. But it isn’t selling easily, and no listing seems to capture what it really is. When it finally does sell, it’s going to be bittersweet.
Have you ever done the Minimalist Challenge? Would you try it? And if so—what’s the very first thing you’d let go of?
Happy fitting into your life,
Anne
