Adventuring with your Taste buds
This year has looked a little different for us. With Krissy’s new work schedule and my workplace being short-staffed, we haven’t been able to camp nearly as much as we’d like. Since our travel has been limited, we’ve had to find adventure in new ways.
Luckily, my thoughtful wife knows me well. She gifted me a yearly subscription to Universal Yums, and it has been the perfect way to explore the world without leaving our kitchen. Each month, a box arrives filled with sweet and savory snacks from a different country. Inside are also stickers, tasting games, trivia, and a pamphlet with fun facts about the country and its food culture. Over the past year, our taste buds have traveled to places like the Netherlands, Ukraine, Turkey, the United Kingdom, Spain, and many more.
Krissy even got her dad a subscription, and it’s been fun to compare notes with him. We’ve shared boxes with friends too, and it’s always hilarious to see how differently people’s taste buds are. (Spoiler: I end up liking way more things than Krissy.) And yes—every country has its own potato chips. Spain’s version? Fried egg flavored. They taste exactly like fried eggs… and honestly, I’m not convinced that flavor belongs on something crunchy! See two of our You Tube videos (Lez Go Together) about Universal Yums: one on Turkey and one on the Netherlands.
This is our lovely friend Ann’s reactions to the food we tried in one box.
As for favorites, mine were the pine hard candies from Spain—though no one else liked them. Krissy found them on Amazon so I could stock up.
Are you adventurous with your eating? Do you love trying new flavors from other countries? What’s the most memorable thing you’ve ever tasted while traveling?
Taste all the countries’ rainbows,
Anne 🌈
